Progress: Slow and Steady

So much progress has happened, it is slow and steady. The work is grueling and labour intensive. Things are taking shape, however and we should be sitting in a really good position for when spring comes and we need to start putting up buildings, putting in amenities or digging swails. I have managed to go out for a few hours and help justin, leaving Ruby and Sally with my mother-in-law. I was on branch stacking duty. It's uncomplicated and easy enough work, and it was awesome to get out and help in some small way. It was also nice to be able to get some physical activity in that wasn't just going for a walk. Things are looking awesome, the sunlight is coming through the trees now and our spot has revealed some truly beautiful views. It's amazing how a beautiful place can grow more beautiful with each passing day.

(After this week... sorry for the finger in the shot)

The weather has been interesting. Periods of wind and blowing snow with -10 to -20 then it will heat up to 7 to 10 degrees and rain... then freeze up again. While it is beautiful, it makes going places difficult.

The girls are flourishing. I can't believe how big they have gotten. Sally is reading books and has outgrown her car seat and is in a booster seat. Ruby, at 10 months old is walking (and trying to run, God help us) and growing out of 12 month clothes.

Our homeschooling lessons have gone well, We figure that once she is done the workbooks we have she will be proficient enough to pass Kindergarten (here they call it Primary). We have taken a couple online and inperson classes through a website called "Outschool" which she likes. It gives her an idea of what classroom learning would be like. Her dance class is through this site as well as some ukelele lessons starting this week. Fingers crossed she likes that class. She is a natural and curious learner. We try and foster that and try not to take learning opportunities for granted. Walks through the wildness present so many of these opportunities as does her inclination to play with things that can be explained through science (think pouring water over snow to learn volume and melting v freezing)... learning is everywhere when your a kid!

We have spent many hours at the toboggan Hill, many hours at the skating pond, and many hours walking around with our new friends from the Czech Republic. We have a number of friends in the community and have been to birthdays, a holiday party, and many outings... its been nice finding friends who are either like minded, who homeschool, or who are new to the community as well.
(Sally in Pink, myself in Teal, Ruby attached to me, and our friends from the Czech Republic).

That's a good update for all of you. Sending you all love from the East Coast. We hope that everything is good where you are and you are all happy and thriving.

  1. Justin's photos of the ice are amazing. You hear about those ice storms out East but I've never experienced one myself. Very interesting. Anyway - love hearing how well everyone is doing and glad to hear you are making friends in the community. I love this journey for you guys!!! :)

It's nature!

When telling Sally, "Darling, you have grass in your hair." She looks at me and shrugs "ahhh, it's just nature." And walks away. She has better things to do, now  the sun is shining. Pickles, her constant companion, and her like to race to the mailbox and back. She has yet to win, but never stops trying. Her determination is solid, unwavering. Just like her loyalty to her dog. It's one of the things I admire most about her. J and Ruby were sitting watching a YouTube show on my phone the other day. She inevitably changed the show, as 2 year olds do. Justin asks her "Ruby, uh oh, what did you do?" She looks up at him with a quirky smile "I pushing buttons Dad!" She exclaims then let's out a chuckle. We all burst out laughing. Her comedic timing is unparalleled in 2 year olds, she is whitty and clever and so very funny. It's one of the things I cherish most about her. So much waiting has occurred in Justin and I's life together. ...

Update on the property

Just a quick update on the property. We got the tally back from the dumpster and Justin removed 4.6 tones of garbage. He also removed 2 cars, one truck (?) which I have named the Chevy Ford (thanks to my friend Larissa). His work has paid off and now he can just work on felling trees in January. The space has opened up a lot without those vehicles and it's nice to not just see garbage when you walk around the property.  The cars were removed on Tuesday. The truck will hopefully be removed next week. I  am hoping Justin can take a small break over Christmas once his contract ends so he can rest and recuperate. So much work is yet to come.  Onwards and upwards.

Fall harvest and progress

We are settling into our new schedule. It's been for the better as the girls are quicker to sleep - perhaps we should have switched up the timing sooner!?  Progress is the name of the game right now... we have progress on our property. An excavator spent the day picking stumps and all manner of stuff off the ground and a dozer is going to come in behind it and level it all off. Things are happening - we will soon have a driveway! This all and the culvert is expected on Monday - or when ever it is a little dryer. A hurricane has threatened our progress this weekend. Who knows what will happen with the weather... I do know that the land we have looks incredible. It seems now, in Spring we will have a building going up.... it is all very exciting!! I have managed to get some relish made this past week also - yeah for expanding and learning new skills. Harvest has continued and we have herbs drying, garlic cured and cucumbers to last us another week or so. We just discovere...
